Liability Insurance Adventures & How to Protect Your Business
There are many commonalities among Surveyors across Canada, and unfortunately, making professional errors are one of them. This presentation will review the insurance loss history of surveyors in Ontario, Quebec and Nationally. It will discuss common surveyor errors in Ontario and Quebec, examine real life claim scenarios, and outline the financial impact on the surveyor & the client. This highly entertaining presentation is a “must see” as you will gain valuable insight on typical surveyor errors and more importantly, how to avoid making them yourself!
Joseph Young is President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of the J.D. Barnes Limited group of companies, one of Canada’s largest integrated land surveying, aerial mapping, underground utility locating, GIS and planning consulting firms.
Under his tenure, Joseph has helped usher in a new era for the firm, growing and diversifying JDB as a strong, innovative, and relationship-oriented professional consulting firm. Joseph brings more than 25 years of business and consulting experience, having led divisions of J.D. Barnes Limited’s land surveying, aerial mapping and ecommerce businesses.
Joseph has been a member of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors since 1998 and is currently the chairman of the AOLS Insurance Advisory Committee. Since 2016 Joseph has served as chairman of the York University Geomatics Engineering & Geomatics Science Advisory Committee. Since 2009 Joseph has been a member of the Canadian Standards Association serving on the S250 Mapping of Underground Utility Infrastructure Technical Committee and the Z663 Land Use Planning in the Vicinity of Pipelines Technical Committee.
Dan Dzaldov is a partner of Schaeffer Dzaldov Bennett Ltd., one of Ontario’s largest privately owned and oldest Land Surveying firms. Dan brings with him 30 years of business and professional experience contributing to the growth and success of Schaeffer Dzaldov Bennett Ltd. Schaeffer Dzaldov Bennett Ltd. (previously Schaeffer & Reinthaler Limited) has and continues to participate in the dynamic growth of the Metropolitan Toronto region and surroundings. Together with its predecessor firms, Schaeffer Dzaldov Bennett Ltd. has been a thriving business, serving the development & construction industry as well as government clients, since 1956.
Dan is the incoming Vice-President of the AOLS Council. Dan has been a member of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors since 2001. He has been on the Insurance Advisory Committee for many years including being past chair. He has lectured to students and spoken at previous AGMs. He has been a Director of THMP, a not for profit organization since 2008. Dan has served as chair of the AOLS Discipline Committee and currently is on the AOLS Education Foundation’s Board. He has been a member of the AOLS Council for the past two year and served as Finance Councilor last year.
Mark Sampson, BBA, FCIP
Mark Sampson, BBA, FCIP is the Senior Vice President of Commercial Insurance for Arthur J. Gallagher Canada – formerly known as The CG&B Group. Mark is the insurance broker who is responsible for the professional liability insurance programs for both the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors as well as Professional Surveyors Canada.
Mr. Sampson has been in the insurance industry for 20 years and specializes in developing professional association group errors and omissions liability programs.
Arthur J. Gallagher, operates in every province and are widely regarded in the insurance industry as one of the leading brokerages for professional liability insurance.

Dasha has over 25 years extensive land surveying experience including planning, supervising and directing the production of legal surveys and plans. She has managed private professional surveying firms providing supervision, advice and direction to staff, consultants, clients, government officials, municipal authorities and other agencies.
Dasha has been a member of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors since 1999 and is the Past- President. She served on council from 2011 until 2013 and as the President in 2014. Currently, she is a member of the AOLS Insurance Advisory Committee and a member of the Registration Committee.
Stephen Black – Adjuster, Maltmans Group International – AOLS insurance program
Stephen is a dedicated insurance professional with more than 27 years of geomatics related experience, including 16 years investigating, analyzing and resolving liability insurance claim files for land surveyors, architects and engineers. Stephen specializes in investigating professional liability claims – including complex large construction related liability files, errors and omissions liability, environmental impairment liability and miscellaneous liability.
Responsibilities include the investigation of claims to determine the extent of an insured’s liability and the amount of supportable damages. Stephen assists with the negotiation of settlements with claimants in accordance with policy provisions and instructions. Stephen has detailed knowledge of survey risks, fabric and standards of practice from all common law jurisdictions across Canada.
Sébastien Patry joined the team of Rousseau Boisvert lawyers, La Capitale General Insurance Inc. litigation, in the winter of 2017 as a legal trainee to complete his professional training at the École du Barreau du Québec .
Graduated since 2015, he holds a bachelor’s degree in civil law (LL.B) from the Université de Sherbrooke, for which he was named to the Dean’s Award for excellence in academic achievement.
During his studies, Sébastien completed an internship with the judiciary under the supervision of the Honorable Daniel W. Payette of the Superior Court in civil and family matters. He has also worked as a volunteer with Pro Bono Student Canada and the General Association of Residents of the Université de Sherbrooke.
Frédéric Blanchette joined the team of Rousseau Boisvert lawyers, litigation of La Capitale General Insurance Inc. in September 2014. Previously, he was a partner in a firm specializing in insurance law in which he practiced twelve years.
Graduated since 1998, he holds a bachelor’s degree in civil law (LL.B) from the Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec and a bachelor’s degree in common law from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Frédéric began his practice as a lawyer in January 2000.
During his career, Frédéric had the opportunity to represent insured and insurers both in demand and defense before all Courts having jurisdiction in Quebec. He represents land surveyors since 2014.
